Red Queens and Increasing Returns

Red Queens and Increasing Returns

When you decided to obtain a DVD for your science fiction assignment in Module 4, where did you go to find a movie based on a Philip K. Dick book? Did you rent or purchase a DVD, or did you view it digitally on your computer using Netflix or a similar vendor of video-on-demand?

According to Dr. Thornburg, he discusses the six forces that will allow emerging technology. I found the movie based on a Philip K. Dick book from worldcat.org and youtube.com. I viewed the video on the wonderful YouTube. YouTube allow users to freely view any video.

Is the current competition between DVDs and video-on-demand an example of increasing returns or Red Queens? Justify your response with sound reasoning and specific examples.

Yes the current competition between DVDs and video on demand is a great example of Red Queens. A great example of this is Thornburg cited Arthur’s video tape recording between VHS and Betamax.

Where do you think DVDs and video-on-demand are on the four criteria of McLuhan’s tetrad?

I think DVDs and video-on-demand are both great examples of McLuhan’s Law of Media and battling. The new movies can now be viewed on DVD, TV, films, and Netflix.

The Disruptive Power of Second Life

How is Second Life a disruptive technology?

Second Life is a great disruptive technology. Second Life is an online tool that provides virtual world. A disruptive innovation is an innovation that helps create a new market that disrupt any existing market and value market. The Second Life is a great example of new market technology that provides value to the world of education. Second Life is also a great example of disruptive technology because it came out of nowhere.

What technology or innovation did it displace?

Second Life can displace technologies like hyperlinks. Second Life is a great interactive online program that will provide a great look on technology.

How many years do you think Second Life has left before another emerging technology or disruptive technology replaces it?

I think Second Life will be here for a long time. This program provides people with great assess to various technologies such as virtual world. Virtual world is a great example of the new experience of technology.

What are the social benefits of Second Life, and what might be the social implications of virtual worlds in your industry?

There are many social benefits of Second Life. Eryn Grant said that, “Second Life can be a challenge for some people if they don’t have strong communication skills in real life they will have problems communicating in Second Life.

The Disruptive Power of Second Life

Dr. Thornburg (2012) described rhyme of history as a development that rekindles something from the distant past. The promethean board is a great interactive device that will give the students the ability to have a visual learning experience. This new invention will provide various tools and help discontinue the tools like the black board and the traditional chalk board. Throughout the video I notice that Kelly predicted three ways that the web will be transformed over the next 5,000 days. The Promethean Board provides great examples of embodiment, restructuring, and codependency.

Emerging Technologies Tetrad

The promethean board is a revolutionary way to create interactive environment which allows students to participate in active learning. It includes the ability to assess student progress formatively, provide resources, and delivery incredible lessons.
Enhances: What does this technology do that is new? The Promethean board is a revolutionary way to create interactive environment which allows students to participate in active learning. It includes the ability to assess student progress formatively, provide resources, and delivery incredible lessons.   The promethean board will create engaging learning experiences, dynamic lesson award-winning software, and foster collaboration.
Obsoletes: What does this technology replace? This technology replaced chalkboards, whiteboard, classroom computer, LCD projector, overhead projector, and VCR's.

Retrieves/Rekindles: What does this technology bring to mind (or retrieve) from the past? The promethean board brings to mind a whiteboard and overhead projectors.
Reverses: What might replace this technology in the future, or what might it cause to occur? There are so many things that can replace the promethean board. Virtual learning is very important to the educational world. In the future promethean board will allow the students to experience hand-on activities and explore in class field trips.

Identify an Emerged Technology

Utilizing Thornburg’s format, respond to the following:

·         Identify a current technology that has emerged in the last few years that shapes learning or productivity in your industry.

·         What problems or challenges have been associated with this technology?

·         What societal need does it meet, and what are its benefits?

·         What would make this technology even better, avoiding the pitfalls you identified?

Promethean board is a current technology that has emerged in the last few years and has shaped the learning and productivity helped education. There are some problems and challenges associated with using the Promethean board. Funding is the first problem for Promethean boards and the second problem is the proper training. Promethean improves learning productivity by educators developing an innovative technology in the 21st century learning environments that work. Regardless of the pitfalls I’ve observed that the Promethean board keeps students and teachers actively involved in learning and resolves different challenges of teaching various students live in a technological world.
